Anxiety: Commonly Unperceived Factors

Anxiety disorders are recognized as the leading mental health illness in the United States, yet only 36 percent of the American population diagnosed with anxiety receives treatment. Do you wonder why this occurs? Anxiety disorders are often triggered by a set of risk factors that are unperceived by the American citizen as a cause of the routinely habits of daily life.

Anxiety disorders are likely to be triggered when a person regularly experiences high levels of distress, worry, or fear. Many of the symptoms related to anxiety are similar to the daily feelings that Americans experience on a regular business day. The accelerated lifestyle and high-paced environment experienced by individuals in leading economy cities is toxic, but socially accepted, so individuals diagnosed, or suffering from anxiety will not seek treatment because they believe it is unnecessary.

Here are some commonly unperceived factors of anxiety found in the current daily lives of American citizens:

• Having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety
• Regularly feeling nervous, restless or tense
• Having a sense of impending panic, duty, danger or doom
• Having an increased heart rate in times of calmness
• Hyperventilating
• Feeling weak or tired from excessive thinking
• Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry
• Having trouble sleeping
• Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems
• Having difficulty controlling worry
• Sweating irregularly

If you regularly experience 3 or more of these symptoms, you are at risk of suffering from anxiety.
